اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي تَغَيَّرَ فِيهَا كُلُّ شَيْءٍ (The Night Everything Changed)

اِسْتَيْقَظَ أَحْمَدُ فِي مُنْتَصَفِ اللَّيْلِ عَلَى صَوْتٍ غَرِيبٍ.
(Ahmed woke up in the middle of the night when he heard a strange sound.)

فَتَحَ عَيْنَيْهِ بِبُطْءٍ، وَأَصْغَى جَيِّدًا…
(He slowly opened his eyes and listened carefully…)

كَانَ هُنَاكَ صَوْتُ سُعَالٍ شَدِيدٍ يَأْتِي مِنْ غُرْفَةِ أُمِّهِ.
(He could hear someone coughing badly in his mother’s room.)

نَهَضَ مِنْ فِرَاشِهِ بِسُرْعَةٍ، وَمَشَى نَحْوَ غُرْفَتِهَا وَهُوَ يَشْعُرُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الْخَوْفِ.
(He quickly climbed out of bed and hurried toward her room, feeling a little afraid.)

فَتَحَ الْبَابَ بِهُدُوءٍ وَقَالَ:
(He gently opened the door and said:)

— أُمِّي… هَلْ أَنْتِ بِخَيْرٍ؟
(“Mom… are you okay?”)

لَكِنَّ أُمَّهُ لَمْ تُجِبْ.
(But his mother didn’t answer.)

اِقْتَرَبَ أَحْمَدُ مِنْهَا، وَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ الصَّغِيرَةَ عَلَى جَبِينِهَا…
(Ahmed stepped closer and placed his little hand on her forehead…)

فَتَجَمَّدَ فِي مَكَانِهِ.
(He froze.)

كَانَ جَبِينُهَا سَاخِنًا جِدًّا!
(Her forehead was burning hot!)

فَتَحَ أَحْمَدُ عَيْنَيْهِ بِقَلَقٍ وَقَالَ:
(Ahmed’s eyes widened with worry.)

— أُمِّي! حَرَارَتُكِ مُرْتَفِعَةٌ!
(“Mom! You have a fever!”)

فَتَحَتِ الْأُمُّ عَيْنَيْهَا بِصُعُوبَةٍ، وَحَاوَلَتْ أَنْ تَبْتَسِمَ حَتَّى لَا تُخِيفَهُ.
(His mother slowly opened her eyes and tried to smile so he wouldn’t be frightened.)

وَقَالَتْ بِصَوْتٍ مُتْعَبٍ:
(In a tired voice, she said:)

— لَا تَقْلَقْ يَا أَحْمَدُ… سَأَكُونُ بِخَيْرٍ. اِذْهَبْ وَنَمْ يَا حَبِيبِي.
(“Don’t worry, Ahmed… I’ll be fine. Go back to sleep, sweetheart.”)

لَكِنَّ أَحْمَدَ لَمْ يَتَحَرَّكْ.
(But Ahmed didn’t move.)

كَانَ يَعْرِفُ أُمَّهُ جَيِّدًا.
(He knew his mother very well.)

وَكَانَ يَعْرِفُ أَيْضًا أَنَّ ابْتِسَامَتَهَا هَذِهِ تُخْفِي وَرَاءَهَا تَعَبًا كَبِيرًا.
(And he knew that behind her gentle smile, she was feeling much worse than she wanted him to know.)

فِي تِلْكَ اللَّحْظَةِ، اِتَّخَذَ أَحْمَدُ قَرَارًا…
(At that moment, Ahmed made a decision…)

قَرَارًا لَمْ يَكُنْ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ سَيَجْعَلُ هَذَا الْيَوْمَ وَاحِدًا مِنْ أَهَمِّ الْأَيَّامِ فِي حَيَاتِهِ.
(A decision that would turn this into one of the most unforgettable days of his life.)

صَبَاحٌ مُخْتَلِفٌ (A Different Kind of Morning)

فِي الصَّبَاحِ، اِسْتَيْقَظَ أَحْمَدُ مُبَكِّرًا.
(The next morning, Ahmed woke up early.)

عَادَةً، كَانَتْ رَائِحَةُ الْخُبْزِ السَّاخِنِ تَمْلَأُ الْبَيْتَ، وَكَانَ يَسْمَعُ صَوْتَ أُمِّهِ وَهِيَ تُنَادِي:
(Usually, the delicious smell of warm bread filled the house, and he would hear his mother calling out:)

— أَحْمَدُ! اِسْتَيْقِظْ يَا بَطَلُ، لَقَدْ تَأَخَّرْتَ!
(“Ahmed! Wake up, sleepyhead! You’re going to be late!”)

لَكِنَّ هَذَا الصَّبَاحَ…
(But this morning…)

كَانَ الْبَيْتُ صَامِتًا.
(The house was completely silent.)

لَا صَوْتَ فِي الْمَطْبَخِ.
(There were no sounds coming from the kitchen.)

وَلَا رَائِحَةَ لِلطَّعَامِ.
(There was no delicious smell of breakfast.)

وَلَا خُطُوَاتَ لِأُمِّهِ فِي أَرْجَاءِ الْمَنْزِلِ.
(And he couldn’t hear his mother’s familiar footsteps around the house.)

ذَهَبَ أَحْمَدُ إِلَى غُرْفَتِهَا، فَوَجَدَهَا لَا تَزَالُ فِي فِرَاشِهَا.
(Ahmed went to her room and found her still lying in bed.)

قَالَتْ لَهُ:
(She looked at him and said:)

— سَامِحْنِي يَا أَحْمَدُ… لَمْ أَسْتَطِعْ إِعْدَادَ الْفُطُورِ الْيَوْمَ.
(“I’m sorry, Ahmed… I wasn’t able to make breakfast this morning.”)

نَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا أَحْمَدُ بِدَهْشَةٍ.
(Ahmed stared at her in surprise.)

كَيْفَ تَعْتَذِرُ أُمُّهُ وَهِيَ مَرِيضَةٌ؟
(Why was she apologizing when she was the one who was sick?)

اِقْتَرَبَ مِنْهَا وَقَالَ:
(He stepped closer and said:)

— بَلْ أَنَا مَنْ سَيُعِدُّ الْفُطُورَ الْيَوْمَ!
(“Then I’ll make breakfast today!”)

اِبْتَسَمَتِ الْأُمُّ وَقَالَتْ:
(His mother smiled.)

— أَنْتَ؟
(“You?”)

رَفَعَ أَحْمَدُ رَأْسَهُ بِثِقَةٍ وَقَالَ:
(Ahmed lifted his head proudly.)

— نَعَمْ، أَنَا!
(“Yes, me!”)

ثُمَّ أَسْرَعَ إِلَى الْمَطْبَخِ.
(And with that, he hurried off to the kitchen.)

الْكَارِثَةُ الْأُولَى! (The First Disaster!)

وَقَفَ أَحْمَدُ أَمَامَ الْمَطْبَخِ وَوَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ عَلَى خَصْرِهِ.
(Ahmed stood in the kitchen with his hands on his hips.)

نَظَرَ إِلَى الْخُبْزِ.
(He looked at the bread.)

ثُمَّ إِلَى الْبَيْضِ.
(Then at the eggs.)

ثُمَّ إِلَى الْحَلِيبِ.
(Then at the milk.)

وَقَالَ لِنَفْسِهِ:
(He said to himself:)

«الْأَمْرُ سَهْلٌ جِدًّا!»
(“This is going to be easy!”)

وَبَعْدَ عَشْرِ دَقَائِقَ…
(Ten minutes later…)

كَانَ الْمَطْبَخُ يَبْدُو وَكَأَنَّ عَاصِفَةً مَرَّتْ مِنْ دَاخِلِهِ!
(The kitchen looked as if a tornado had swept through it!)

سَقَطَ قَلِيلٌ مِنَ الْحَلِيبِ عَلَى الطَّاوِلَةِ.
(Milk was spilled across the table.)

وَانْكَسَرَتْ بَيْضَةٌ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ.
(An egg had cracked all over the floor.)

وَاحْتَرَقَتْ قِطْعَةٌ مِنَ الْخُبْزِ!
(And a piece of bread was completely burnt!)

نَظَرَ أَحْمَدُ إِلَى الْفَوْضَى وَقَالَ:
(Ahmed looked around at the mess and cried:)

— يَا إِلَهِي! كَيْفَ تَفْعَلُ أُمِّي كُلَّ هَذَا كُلَّ يَوْمٍ؟!
(“Oh my goodness! How does Mom do all of this every single day?!”)

شَعَرَ بِالْإِحْبَاطِ لِلَحْظَةٍ.
(For a moment, Ahmed felt discouraged.)

كَادَ أَنْ يَسْتَسْلِمَ.
(He almost gave up.)

لَكِنَّهُ تَذَكَّرَ أُمَّهُ وَهِيَ تُعِدُّ لَهُ الطَّعَامَ كُلَّ صَبَاحٍ، حَتَّى عِنْدَمَا تَكُونُ مُتْعَبَةً.
(But then he remembered how his mother made breakfast for him every morning, even on days when she was tired.)

فَقَالَ:
(So he told himself:)

— لَنْ أَسْتَسْلِمَ.
(“I’m not giving up.”)

نَظَّفَ مَا اسْتَطَاعَ، ثُمَّ أَعَدَّ كُوبًا مِنَ الْحَلِيبِ الدَّافِئِ، وَوَضَعَ بَعْضَ الْخُبْزِ وَالْجُبْنِ فِي طَبَقٍ.
(He cleaned up as best he could, prepared a cup of warm milk, and placed some bread and cheese on a plate.)

حَمَلَ الصِّينِيَّةَ بِحَذَرٍ شَدِيدٍ.
(Then he carefully picked up the tray.)

لَكِنْ…
(But then…)

عِنْدَمَا وَصَلَ إِلَى بَابِ غُرْفَةِ أُمِّهِ، تَعَثَّرَ بِالسَّجَّادَةِ!
(Just as he reached his mother’s bedroom, his foot caught on the rug!)

اِهْتَزَّ الْكُوبُ وَكَادَ أَنْ يَسْقُطَ.
(The cup wobbled dangerously and nearly fell.)

صَرَخَ أَحْمَدُ:
(Ahmed cried out:)

— لَاااا!
(“Noooo!”)

لَكِنَّهُ أَمْسَكَ بِالصِّينِيَّةِ فِي اللَّحْظَةِ الْأَخِيرَةِ.
(But at the very last second, he managed to steady the tray.)

تَنَفَّسَ بِارْتِيَاحٍ وَقَالَ:
(He let out a huge sigh of relief.)

— الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ!
(“Thank goodness!”)

دَخَلَ الْغُرْفَةَ وَوَضَعَ الْفُطُورَ أَمَامَ أُمِّهِ.
(He entered the room and proudly placed the breakfast in front of his mother.)

نَظَرَتِ الْأُمُّ إِلَى الصِّينِيَّةِ، ثُمَّ إِلَى وَجْهِ أَحْمَدَ.
(His mother looked at the tray, then at Ahmed’s hopeful face.)

كَانَتْ تَعْرِفُ أَنَّ الْفُطُورَ بَسِيطٌ…
(She knew it was a very simple breakfast…)

لَكِنَّهُ بِالنِّسْبَةِ إِلَيْهَا، كَانَ أَجْمَلَ فُطُورٍ فِي الْعَالَمِ.
(But to her, it was the most wonderful breakfast in the whole world.)

قَالَتْ:
(She smiled and said:)

— شُكْرًا يَا أَحْمَدُ.
(“Thank you, Ahmed.”)

اِبْتَسَمَ وَقَالَ:
(Ahmed smiled proudly and said:)

— الْيَوْمَ… أَنَا الْمَسْؤُولُ عَنْكِ.
(“Today… I’m going to take care of you.”)

ضَحِكَتْ أُمُّهُ رَغْمَ تَعَبِهَا.
(His mother laughed, even though she was still feeling weak.)

سِرٌّ صَغِيرٌ اكْتَشَفَهُ أَحْمَدُ (A Little Secret Ahmed Discovered)

بَعْدَ قَلِيلٍ، بَدَأَ أَحْمَدُ يُنَظِّفُ الْبَيْتَ.
(A little later, Ahmed decided to tidy up the house.)

جَمَعَ أَلْعَابَهُ.
(He picked up his toys.)

رَتَّبَ الْوَسَائِدَ.
(He straightened the cushions.)

وَغَسَلَ بَعْضَ الْأَكْوَابِ.
(And he washed a few cups.)

وَأَثْنَاءَ ذَلِكَ، لَاحَظَ شَيْئًا غَرِيبًا.
(But as he worked, he began to notice something.)

كَانَتْ هُنَاكَ سَلَّةٌ كَبِيرَةٌ مِنَ الْمَلَابِسِ تَحْتَاجُ إِلَى التَّرْتِيبِ.
(There was a large basket of laundry waiting to be sorted.)

وَكَانَتِ الْأَطْبَاقُ تَنْتَظِرُ الْغَسْلَ.
(There were dishes waiting to be washed.)

وَكَانَتْ هُنَاكَ أَشْيَاءُ كَثِيرَةٌ تَقُومُ بِهَا أُمُّهُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ دُونَ أَنْ يُلَاحِظَهَا.
(There were so many little jobs his mother did every day—things he had never even noticed before.)

جَلَسَ أَحْمَدُ لِلَحْظَةٍ وَقَالَ فِي نَفْسِهِ:
(Ahmed sat down for a moment and wondered:)

«هَلْ تَفْعَلُ أُمِّي كُلَّ هَذَا وَحْدَهَا… كُلَّ يَوْمٍ؟»
(“Does Mom really do all of this by herself… every single day?”)

وَفَجْأَةً، شَعَرَ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الْحُزْنِ.
(Suddenly, Ahmed felt a little sad.)

تَذَكَّرَ كَمْ مَرَّةً تَرَكَ أَلْعَابَهُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ.
(He remembered all the times he had left his toys scattered across the floor.)

وَكَمْ مَرَّةً طَلَبَ مِنْ أُمِّهِ كُوبَ مَاءٍ وَهُوَ يَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ يُحْضِرَهُ بِنَفْسِهِ.
(He remembered how often he had asked his mother to bring him water when he could easily have gotten it himself.)

وَكَمْ مَرَّةً قَالَتْ لَهُ:
(And he remembered how many times she had said:)

— رَتِّبْ غُرْفَتَكَ يَا أَحْمَدُ.
(“Ahmed, please tidy your room.”)

وَكَانَ يُجِيبُ:
(And he would always reply:)

— بَعْدَ قَلِيلٍ يَا أُمِّي!
(“I’ll do it later, Mom!”)

خَفَضَ أَحْمَدُ رَأْسَهُ وَقَالَ:
(Ahmed lowered his head and whispered:)

— يَبْدُو أَنَّنِي كُنْتُ أُتْعِبُ أُمِّي دُونَ أَنْ أَشْعُرَ.
(“I think I’ve been making things harder for Mom without even realizing it.”)

فِي تِلْكَ اللَّحْظَةِ، قَرَّرَ أَنْ يَتَغَيَّرَ.
(At that moment, Ahmed decided that things were going to change.)

لَكِنَّ الْمُشْكِلَةَ الْحَقِيقِيَّةَ لَمْ تَبْدَأْ بَعْدُ…
(But the real problem was only just beginning…)

الدَّوَاءُ الْمَفْقُودُ (The Missing Medicine)

دَخَلَ أَحْمَدُ غُرْفَةَ أُمِّهِ فَوَجَدَهَا تَبْحَثُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ قُرْبَ السَّرِيرِ.
(Ahmed returned to his mother’s room and found her searching for something beside the bed.)

قَالَ:
(He asked:)

— مَاذَا تَبْحَثِينَ عَنْهُ يَا أُمِّي؟
(“What are you looking for, Mom?”)

أَجَابَتْ:
(She replied:)

— دَوَائِي… أَظُنُّ أَنَّ الْعُلْبَةَ فَارِغَةٌ.
(“My medicine… I think I’ve run out.”)

نَظَرَ أَحْمَدُ إِلَى الْعُلْبَةِ.
(Ahmed looked at the medicine box.)

لَمْ يَبْقَ فِيهَا شَيْءٌ.
(It was completely empty.)

شَعَرَ بِالْقَلَقِ.
(A wave of worry came over him.)

قَالَتِ الْأُمُّ:
(His mother said:)

— لَا تَقْلَقْ. سَأَطْلُبُ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمْ أَنْ يُحْضِرَهُ لَاحِقًا.
(“Don’t worry. I’ll ask someone to bring it later.”)

لَكِنَّ أَحْمَدَ لَمْ يَكُنْ مُرْتَاحًا.
(But Ahmed still felt uneasy.)

ذَهَبَ إِلَى هَاتِفِ الْمَنْزِلِ وَاتَّصَلَ بِجَدَّتِهِ.
(He went to the phone and called his grandmother.)

قَالَ بِسُرْعَةٍ:
(He quickly told her:)

— جَدَّتِي! أُمِّي مَرِيضَةٌ وَدَوَاؤُهَا انْتَهَى!
(“Grandma! Mom is sick, and she’s run out of medicine!”)

قَالَتِ الْجَدَّةُ:
(His grandmother calmly replied:)

— اِهْدَأْ يَا أَحْمَدُ. سَأُخْبِرُ خَالَكَ لِيَأْتِيَ إِلَيْكُمْ وَيَأْخُذَهَا إِلَى الطَّبِيبِ إِذَا احْتَاجَتْ إِلَى ذَلِكَ. لَا تُحَاوِلْ إِعْطَاءَهَا أَيَّ دَوَاءٍ مِنْ نَفْسِكَ، مَفْهُومٌ؟
(“Stay calm, Ahmed. I’ll ask your uncle to come over, and if your mother needs to see a doctor, he’ll take her. Don’t try to give her any medicine on your own, okay?”)

قَالَ أَحْمَدُ:
(Ahmed replied:)

— مَفْهُومٌ يَا جَدَّتِي.
(“Okay, Grandma. I understand.”)

ثُمَّ عَادَ إِلَى أُمِّهِ.
(Then he returned to his mother’s side.)

وَبَعْدَ وَقْتٍ قَصِيرٍ، وَصَلَ خَالُهُ.
(A short while later, his uncle arrived.)

اِطْمَأَنَّ عَلَى الْأُمِّ، وَتَوَاصَلُوا مَعَ الطَّبِيبِ، ثُمَّ أَحْضَرَ لَهَا الدَّوَاءَ الْمُنَاسِبَ.
(He checked on Ahmed’s mother, spoke with the doctor, and then brought her the medicine she needed.)

شَعَرَ أَحْمَدُ بِالرَّاحَةِ.
(Ahmed finally felt relieved.)

لَكِنَّهُ أَدْرَكَ دَرْسًا مُهِمًّا:
(But he also learned something very important:)

الْمُسَاعَدَةُ لَا تَعْنِي أَنْ تَفْعَلَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ وَحْدَكَ.
(Helping someone doesn’t mean you have to do everything by yourself.)

أَحْيَانًا، أَفْضَلُ مُسَاعَدَةٍ هِيَ أَنْ تَطْلُبَ الْمُسَاعَدَةَ مِنَ الشَّخْصِ الْمُنَاسِبِ.
(Sometimes, the best way to help is to ask the right person for help.)

الْمُفَاجَأَةُ الَّتِي أَبْكَتِ الْأُمَّ (The Surprise That Brought Tears to Mom’s Eyes)

بَعْدَ أَنْ أَخَذَتِ الْأُمُّ دَوَاءَهَا وَنَامَتْ قَلِيلًا، جَلَسَ أَحْمَدُ يُفَكِّرُ.
(After his mother took her medicine and fell asleep, Ahmed sat quietly and began to think.)

أَرَادَ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ شَيْئًا يَجْعَلُهَا سَعِيدَةً عِنْدَمَا تَسْتَيْقِظُ.
(He wanted to do something special that would make her smile when she woke up.)

لَكِنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَمْلِكُ هَدِيَّةً.
(But he didn’t have a gift.)

وَلَا مَالًا كَثِيرًا.
(And he didn’t have much money.)

فَمَاذَا يَفْعَلُ؟
(So what could he do?)

فَكَّرَ…
(He thought for a moment…)

ثُمَّ ابْتَسَمَ.
(Then a smile spread across his face.)

أَحْضَرَ وَرَقَةً وَأَلْوَانَهُ.
(He grabbed a sheet of paper and his crayons.)

وَبَدَأَ يَرْسُمُ.
(And he began to draw.)

رَسَمَ بَيْتًا صَغِيرًا.
(He drew a little house.)

وَشَجَرَةً.
(A tree.)

وَشَمْسًا كَبِيرَةً.
(A big, bright sun.)

وَرَسَمَ نَفْسَهُ يُمْسِكُ بِيَدِ أُمِّهِ.
(And then he drew himself holding his mother’s hand.)

ثُمَّ كَتَبَ تَحْتَ الصُّورَةِ بِخَطٍّ غَيْرِ مُرَتَّبٍ:
(Underneath the picture, in his messy little handwriting, he wrote:)

«إِلَى أُمِّي…
(“To Mom…

أَنْتِ تُسَاعِدِينَنِي كُلَّ يَوْمٍ.
(You take care of me every single day.

وَالْيَوْمَ عَرَفْتُ كَمْ تَتْعَبِينَ مِنْ أَجْلِي.
(Today, I finally realized how much you do for me.

عِنْدَمَا أَكْبَرُ، سَأَظَلُّ دَائِمًا بِجَانِبِكِ.
(When I grow up, I promise I’ll always be there for you.

أُحِبُّكِ يَا أُمِّي.»
(I love you, Mom.”)

وَضَعَ أَحْمَدُ الرِّسَالَةَ بِجَانِبِ سَرِيرِهَا.
(Ahmed carefully placed the note beside her bed.)

ثُمَّ خَرَجَ بِهُدُوءٍ.
(Then he quietly slipped out of the room.)

أَيْنَ أَحْمَدُ؟

(Where Is Ahmed?)

بَعْدَ سَاعَاتٍ، اِسْتَيْقَظَتِ الْأُمُّ.
(A few hours later, Ahmed’s mother woke up.)

كَانَتْ تَشْعُرُ بِتَحَسُّنٍ قَلِيلٍ.
(She was beginning to feel a little better.)

نَظَرَتْ حَوْلَهَا وَقَالَتْ:
(She looked around and called:)

— أَحْمَدُ؟
(“Ahmed?”)

لَمْ يُجِبْ أَحَدٌ.
(There was no answer.)

نَادَتْهُ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى:
(She called again:)

— أَحْمَدُ!
(“Ahmed!”)

لَا صَوْتَ.
(Silence.)

شَعَرَتْ بِالْقَلَقِ.
(She began to worry.)

نَهَضَتْ بِبُطْءٍ وَخَرَجَتْ مِنْ غُرْفَتِهَا.
(Slowly, she got out of bed and left her room.)

بَحَثَتْ فِي غُرْفَةِ أَحْمَدَ.
(She checked Ahmed’s room.)

لَمْ تَجِدْهُ.
(He wasn’t there.)

ذَهَبَتْ إِلَى الْمَطْبَخِ.
(She went to the kitchen.)

لَمْ يَكُنْ هُنَاكَ.
(He wasn’t there either.)

ثُمَّ سَمِعَتْ صَوْتًا خَافِتًا قَادِمًا مِنْ غُرْفَةِ الْجُلُوسِ.
(Then she heard a faint sound coming from the living room.)

اِقْتَرَبَتْ…
(She walked closer…)

فَتَوَقَّفَتْ عِنْدَ الْبَابِ.
(And stopped in the doorway.)

كَانَ أَحْمَدُ نَائِمًا عَلَى الْأَرِيكَةِ.
(There was Ahmed, fast asleep on the sofa.)

وَبِجَانِبِهِ قِطْعَةُ قُمَاشٍ كَانَ يَسْتَخْدِمُهَا لِتَنْظِيفِ الطَّاوِلَةِ.
(Beside him lay the little cloth he had been using to clean the table.)

يَبْدُو أَنَّهُ حَاوَلَ إِكْمَالَ أَعْمَالِ الْمَنْزِلِ…
(It seemed he had tried to finish cleaning the house…)

لَكِنَّ التَّعَبَ غَلَبَهُ فَنَامَ.
(But exhaustion had finally caught up with him, and he had fallen asleep.)

وَضَعَتِ الْأُمُّ يَدَهَا عَلَى فَمِهَا.
(His mother covered her mouth with her hand.)

وَامْتَلَأَتْ عَيْنَاهَا بِالدُّمُوعِ.
(Her eyes filled with tears.)

اِقْتَرَبَتْ مِنْهُ، وَجَلَسَتْ بِجَانِبِهِ.
(She walked over and sat gently beside him.)

وَفِي تِلْكَ اللَّحْظَةِ، رَأَتِ الْوَرَقَةَ الَّتِي رَسَمَهَا.
(That was when she noticed the picture he had drawn.)

قَرَأَتْهَا.
(She read his little note.)

وَسَقَطَتْ دَمْعَةٌ عَلَى خَدِّهَا.
(A tear rolled down her cheek.)

فَتَحَتْ ذِرَاعَيْهَا وَاحْتَضَنَتْ أَحْمَدَ وَهُوَ نَائِمٌ.
(She wrapped her arms around Ahmed and hugged him as he slept.)

اِسْتَيْقَظَ أَحْمَدُ وَقَالَ:
(Ahmed slowly opened his eyes and asked:)

— أُمِّي؟ هَلْ أَنْتِ بِخَيْرٍ الْآنَ؟
(“Mom? Are you feeling better now?”)

قَالَتْ وَهِيَ تَبْتَسِمُ:
(She smiled warmly and said:)

— أَنَا أَفْضَلُ بِكَثِيرٍ يَا حَبِيبِي.
(“I’m feeling much better now, sweetheart.”)

ثُمَّ أَضَافَتْ:
(Then she added:)

— لَكِنْ لَدَيَّ سُؤَالٌ.
(“But I do have one question.”)

قَالَ أَحْمَدُ:
(Ahmed blinked.)

— مَاذَا؟
(“What?”)

أَشَارَتْ إِلَى الْمَطْبَخِ وَقَالَتْ:
(She pointed toward the kitchen and asked:)

— مَاذَا حَدَثَ هُنَاكَ؟!
(“What on earth happened in there?!”)

اِتَّسَعَتْ عَيْنَا أَحْمَدَ.
(Ahmed’s eyes suddenly grew wide.)

تَذَكَّرَ الْبَيْضَةَ الْمَكْسُورَةَ وَالْحَلِيبَ الَّذِي سَكَبَهُ.
(He remembered the broken egg and the milk he had spilled.)

قَالَ بِخَجَلٍ:
(He smiled sheepishly and said:)

— فِي الْحَقِيقَةِ… كَانَتْ هُنَاكَ مَعْرَكَةٌ صَغِيرَةٌ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ الْفُطُورِ.
(“Well… let’s just say breakfast and I had a little battle.”)

ضَحِكَتْ أُمُّهُ.
(His mother burst out laughing.)

وَضَحِكَ أَحْمَدُ.
(Ahmed laughed too.)

وَامْتَلَأَ الْبَيْتُ مِنْ جَدِيدٍ بِصَوْتٍ جَمِيلٍ افْتَقَدَهُ طَوَالَ الْيَوْمِ.
(And once again, the house was filled with the beautiful sound Ahmed had missed all day.)

صَوْتِ ضَحْكَةِ أُمِّهِ.
(The sound of his mother’s laughter.)

وَعْدُ أَحْمَدَ (Ahmed’s Promise)

فِي الْمَسَاءِ، جَلَسَ أَحْمَدُ بِجَانِبِ أُمِّهِ.
(That evening, Ahmed sat beside his mother.)

قَالَ لَهَا:
(He looked at her and said:)

— أُمِّي…
(“Mom…”)

— نَعَمْ يَا حَبِيبِي؟
(“Yes, sweetheart?”)

قَالَ:
(He said:)

— كُنْتُ أَظُنُّ أَنَّ الْأَشْيَاءَ فِي الْبَيْتِ تَحْدُثُ وَحْدَهَا.
(“I used to think things around the house just happened by themselves.”)

اِبْتَسَمَتْ وَقَالَتْ:
(His mother smiled and asked:)

— مَاذَا تَقْصِدُ؟
(“What do you mean?”)

قَالَ:
(Ahmed explained:)

— كُنْتُ أَظُنُّ أَنَّ الْمَلَابِسَ تُصْبِحُ نَظِيفَةً وَحْدَهَا… وَأَنَّ الطَّعَامَ يَظْهَرُ عَلَى الْمَائِدَةِ وَحْدَهُ… وَأَنَّ غُرْفَتِي تُصْبِحُ مُرَتَّبَةً بِطَرِيقَةٍ سِحْرِيَّةٍ.
(“I thought the clothes somehow cleaned themselves… that food magically appeared on the table… and that my room somehow became tidy all on its own.”)

ضَحِكَتِ الْأُمُّ وَقَالَتْ:
(His mother laughed and asked:)

— وَهَلِ اكْتَشَفْتَ السَّاحِرَ؟
(“So, did you finally discover who the magician is?”)

أَشَارَ أَحْمَدُ إِلَيْهَا وَقَالَ:
(Ahmed pointed at her and said:)

— نَعَمْ… أَنْتِ!
(“Yes… you!”)

ضَحِكَتِ الْأُمُّ.
(His mother laughed.)

ثُمَّ أَصْبَحَ أَحْمَدُ جَادًّا وَقَالَ:
(Then Ahmed’s expression became serious.)

— لَكِنْ مِنَ الْيَوْمِ، سَأُسَاعِدُكِ. لَيْسَ فَقَطْ عِنْدَمَا تَمْرَضِينَ.
(“But from now on, I’m going to help you—not only when you’re sick.”)

نَظَرَتْ إِلَيْهِ أُمُّهُ بِحُبٍّ وَقَالَتْ:
(His mother looked at him lovingly and said:)

— لَا أُرِيدُ مِنْكَ أَنْ تَفْعَلَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ يَا أَحْمَدُ. يَكْفِينِي أَنْ تَكُونَ مَسْؤُولًا عَنْ أَشْيَائِكَ، وَأَنْ تُسَاعِدَ بِمَا تَسْتَطِيعُ.
(“I don’t expect you to do everything, Ahmed. Just take responsibility for your own things and help whenever you can. That’s more than enough.”)

هَزَّ أَحْمَدُ رَأْسَهُ وَقَالَ:
(Ahmed nodded.)

— أَعِدُكِ.
(“I promise.”)

وَمُنْذُ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ…
(And from that day on…)

حَدَثَ شَيْءٌ غَرِيبٌ فِي الْبَيْتِ.
(Something very strange began happening in the house.)

بَدَأَتِ الْأَلْعَابُ تَجِدُ طَرِيقَهَا إِلَى صُنْدُوقِهَا دُونَ أَنْ تَطْلُبَ الْأُمُّ ذَلِكَ عَشْرَ مَرَّاتٍ!
(The toys somehow started finding their way back into their box—without Mom having to ask ten times!)

وَبَدَأَتِ الْأَكْوَابُ تَصِلُ إِلَى الْمَطْبَخِ بَعْدَ اسْتِخْدَامِهَا!
(Used cups mysteriously started making their way back to the kitchen!)

وَأَصْبَحَ سَرِيرُ أَحْمَدَ يُرَتَّبُ كُلَّ صَبَاحٍ.
(And Ahmed’s bed was suddenly being made every morning.)

وَكَانَتْ أُمُّهُ أَحْيَانًا تَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ وَتَقُولُ مَازِحَةً:
(Sometimes, his mother would look at him and tease:)

— مَنْ أَنْتَ؟ وَأَيْنَ أَحْمَدُ الْقَدِيمُ؟
(“Who are you, and what have you done with the old Ahmed?”)

فَيَضْحَكُ أَحْمَدُ وَيَقُولُ:
(Ahmed would laugh and reply:)

— أَحْمَدُ الْقَدِيمُ ذَهَبَ فِي إِجَازَةٍ طَوِيلَةٍ!
(“The old Ahmed went on a very long vacation!”)

بَعْدَ سَنَوَاتٍ… (Years Later…)

مَرَّتِ الْأَيَّامُ وَالسِّنُونَ.
(Days turned into years.)

وَكَبِرَ أَحْمَدُ.
(And Ahmed grew up.)

لَكِنَّهُ لَمْ يَنْسَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ أَبَدًا.
(But he never forgot that special day.)

الْيَوْمَ الَّذِي مَرِضَتْ فِيهِ أُمُّهُ…
(The day his mother became sick…)

فَظَنَّ فِي الْبِدَايَةِ أَنَّهُ هُوَ مَنْ سَيُسَاعِدُهَا.
(At first, he thought he was going to be the one helping her.)

لَكِنَّهُ اكْتَشَفَ فِي النِّهَايَةِ أَنَّهَا، حَتَّى وَهِيَ مَرِيضَةٌ، عَلَّمَتْهُ وَاحِدًا مِنْ أَهَمِّ دُرُوسِ حَيَاتِهِ.
(But in the end, he realized that even while she was sick, his mother had taught him one of the most important lessons of his life.)

عَلَّمَتْهُ أَنَّ الْحُبَّ لَيْسَ مُجَرَّدَ كَلِمَاتٍ نَقُولُهَا.
(She taught him that love is more than simply saying, “I love you.”)

الْحُبُّ أَنْ تُلَاحِظَ تَعَبَ مَنْ تُحِبُّ.

أَنْ تُسَاعِدَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُطْلَبَ مِنْكَ.
(It means offering to help before you are asked.)

أَنْ تَقُولَ: «شُكْرًا».

وَفِي أَحَدِ الْأَيَّامِ، وَجَدَ أَحْمَدُ الْوَرَقَةَ الْقَدِيمَةَ الَّتِي رَسَمَهَا لِأُمِّهِ وَهُوَ صَغِيرٌ.
(One day, many years later, Ahmed found the old picture he had drawn for his mother when he was a little boy.)

كَانَتْ أُمُّهُ لَا تَزَالُ تَحْتَفِظُ بِهَا.
(His mother had kept it all those years.)

سَأَلَهَا:
(He asked her:)

— أُمِّي… لِمَاذَا احْتَفَظْتِ بِهَذِهِ الْوَرَقَةِ كُلَّ هَذِهِ السِّنِينَ؟
(“Mom… why did you keep this little piece of paper for so many years?”)

اِبْتَسَمَتِ الْأُمُّ وَقَالَتْ:
(His mother smiled and said:)

— لِأَنَّنِي فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ كُنْتُ مَرِيضَةً وَمُتْعَبَةً جِدًّا…
(“Because that day, I was very sick and very tired…”)

ثُمَّ نَظَرَتْ إِلَيْهِ وَأَضَافَتْ:
(Then she looked into his eyes and added:)

— لَكِنَّكَ جَعَلْتَ قَلْبِي سَعِيدًا.
(“But you made my heart happy.”)

اِبْتَسَمَ أَحْمَدُ وَاحْتَضَنَهَا.
(Ahmed smiled and wrapped his arms around his mother.)

وَعَرَفَ أَخِيرًا أَنَّ أَجْمَلَ هَدِيَّةٍ يُمْكِنُ أَنْ يُقَدِّمَهَا الْإِنْسَانُ لِأُمِّهِ…
(And he finally understood that the most precious gift anyone can give their mother…)

لَيْسَتْ شَيْئًا يُشْتَرَى بِالْمَالِ.
(Isn’t something that can be bought with money.)

بَلْ قَلْبٌ رَحِيمٌ…
(It is a caring heart…)

وَيَدٌ تُسَاعِدُهَا…

وَابْنٌ لَا يَنْسَى فَضْلَهَا مَهْمَا كَبِرَ.
